I breakdown interesting plays - schematically, technically, and from and execution standpoint - from the 2021 Michigan at Penn State football game.
Just the film this week, but as always, you can find links to previous films reviews for overall summaries of each team provided the tags for each post. Each team has a tag.

First play, UM at PSU. Insert Zone Bang 8 RPO. Good coverage on the outside. Gotta clean up LB level pic.twitter.com/uZOHzMv3o5

Disguising coverage pre snap and then this OL is a problem (not in a good way) pic.twitter.com/WxP1Oj0Esl

Looks like Buster to me, but with a coverage bust. Not 100% sure D is aligned correctly for FIB pic.twitter.com/2gk98vz4Mp

Part 2 of the conversion, looking at the T-T stunt pic.twitter.com/m94f98ZNs5

Michigan struggled to align and feels like that is responsible for the bust here. Swing RPO with Q long trap pic.twitter.com/Foyy8Bp0Vp

Quads Inside Zone RPO. Well defended on the edge. I get a little heated on run blocking anyway pic.twitter.com/CwwfWkHEHQ

Run blocking issues, again out of quads pic.twitter.com/ZSwmMZgAip

Cool fake punt design. Situationally, much harder to convert this than just keeping O on the field though. But it works so… pic.twitter.com/2iRMqYfKmp

Dig is open but QB timer is sped up pic.twitter.com/iv6ofjcPeZ

Bracket coverage takes away the first read as both WRs to that side effectively bracketed. LB stacks the DT then bursts through for the sack pic.twitter.com/gaG0CNTMUk

A wild Wham appears for the first time this year. Don’t get what they expect from D though and end up with 2 free hitters pic.twitter.com/LC1VPciHXH
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 15, 2021
“Week 10 and Michigan still doesn’t know how to attack a defense” people can stfu. Levels concept gets exactly what it’s designed to, but ball is knocked down (by the Center’s helmet) pic.twitter.com/ccy0bxPLln

Two high shell to start rotates into Cover 1. Baits the Toss read and cuts it down for a short gain pic.twitter.com/Aim9GzBXKN
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 15, 2021
3rd and 4. PSU goes option route, UM in Cover 1 but has two rats underneath. Well defended. NT gets a big old bear paw clubbing the Center who ends up tripping up the NT and allowing QB to escape pic.twitter.com/9GuQrJnx31

Don’t know if they are late stemming but something off about LB play here pic.twitter.com/sgOWkvt8Go

Now you’re a man down in the box. This is when you execute the technique from the last clip pic.twitter.com/h6F3KnIbhn

Fit and fold run blitz. 25 just doesn’t fold fast enough to meet in the gap on 3rd and 1 pic.twitter.com/A0uhra86lA
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 15, 2021
Good use of formation and motion to 1) ID coverage and 2) Get Ni into the boundary. Ni will tend to be more aggressive vs TE on toss threat and coverage will typically rotate to help LB Apex to field.

Toss read bluff and go pic.twitter.com/eD0joz0oTW
Next play right back to the bluff and go screen. Really cool seeing it back to back despite not working first time pic.twitter.com/HtEljnWpAt
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 15, 2021
Unique pressure concept here. Ultimately doesn’t work, but cool idea pic.twitter.com/MrInlqDOh3

3rd and Goal run routes should result in a TD pic.twitter.com/36dKwN3iJA
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 15, 2021
Always a fun thing about football is terminology. I call this a "stick" concept. That's not entirely accurate. It's in the "stick" family of plays. Some call it "Branch" (get it, a longer stick) because the "stick route" (#3 receiver) runs to 10-12 yards depth instead of ~6 yards
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 16, 2021
1st and 10 to start Michigan’s second drive. Tackle over counter OH has a huge opening with two defenders caught on the weak side. Missed opportunity pic.twitter.com/nFXIlE7huL
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 16, 2021
Another drive concept. QB anticipated the dig is being carried but apex does well to reroute and fall off. Timing a bit off makes reading dig too late (progression goes drive to dig).
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 16, 2021
Check RB. Wouldn’t anticipate getting in progression, but we’ll come back to it pic.twitter.com/7k6xkGte1E
Free access RPO pic.twitter.com/tXmX865Txp

Odd front Jam Run stunt (End spikes inside, NT loops). Force dive read on triple and go to work pic.twitter.com/NhHWUdvWAn
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 16, 2021
Triple option teams learned long ago you can’t just run triple option, or defense will dictate what you do. Need all the tools in the tool box, even calling off RPO at times
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 16, 2021
Double screen. Tunnel is well set up by the bluff and go schemes PSU ran earlier pic.twitter.com/vatHcFdemv
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 16, 2021
PSU back to quads. One of the reason you run this is it often puts a CB into the fit or D down a gap up front. Here, DE spikes inside and PSU gets the edge pic.twitter.com/DwBvNg3IDZ
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 16, 2021
PSU fakes the swing screen goes TE middle screen. UM in Cover 1, LB does a great job sticking with his coverage pic.twitter.com/G7sfkYAL21
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 16, 2021
Counter CH. PSU drops down the safety and should be gapped out, but UM can still make this work if H gets his block pic.twitter.com/kFjRAM8Ikn
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 16, 2021
That's an autocorrect "carries" to someone named "Carrie" possessing #3.
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 16, 2021
Great inside pass rush by PSU DE. Rest of OL holds up well, particularly the LG. But this DE is a problem (in a good way for PSU) pic.twitter.com/Vi3mjMhMHs
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 16, 2021
Not exactly a well executed screen, but UM identified ability earlier for RB to leak out on 3rd and long. One poor tackle later it’s a first down pic.twitter.com/TU2RsRcVpE
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 16, 2021
PSU goes high risk with a late CB blitz without rotating the safety presnap. Wins back numbers in the box and messes up backside block ID for pin and pull scheme pic.twitter.com/CafowB6Ezw
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 16, 2021
First time seeing this this year. Single back power RPO with a front side slant pic.twitter.com/ivqkTH1NYO
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 16, 2021
Think it's probably just Cover 4 MEG and the safety needs to react to fast flow from #2 because the LB is inside the formation
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 16, 2021
Good use of late motion, causes a miscommunication and WR splits make it very difficult for LB to get out on the wheel. Pass dropped pic.twitter.com/F2hunHRB7Q
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 17, 2021
Back to drive levels. Pressure from the end. LT loses the rep but saves the play pic.twitter.com/sWO8tqglZW
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 17, 2021
PSU pre snap look nothing like the post snap, makes it really hard to call plays and execute. Michigan executes post snap well enough to get the first down, but you see all the moving parts pic.twitter.com/NIRchFIKxR
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 17, 2021
Out manned in the box but the RB makes the blocking right pic.twitter.com/K9fgIjNQ43
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 17, 2021
Here’s a design I really liked that didn’t work. Jet motion, orbit return, end around opposite direction of orbit. Think PSU40 saves a TD here pic.twitter.com/LokM6OgrBG
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 17, 2021
4th and 2 stop for PSU. Yes, weakside is open. I think PSU is misaligned because you don’t purposefully leave yourself like this without some sort of game to put numbers weak. PSU40 shows up again anyway though pic.twitter.com/ip81eS1jh2
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 17, 2021
Really cool design with really really frustrating OL play pic.twitter.com/bGhdp1dCgU
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 17, 2021
Said it was vs MSU but it was vs Narduzzi at Pitt. Here's the old example. Notice the QB doesn't try to sell lead draw https://t.co/OgettrlSvB
