I breakdown interesting plays - schematically, technically, and from and execution standpoint - from the 2021 Iowa vs Michigan Big Ten Championship.
Just the film this week, but as always, you can find links to previous films reviews for overall summaries of each team provided the tags for each post. Each team has a tag.

First play, Michigan vs Iowa. Insert Zone RPO with orbit motion. Swing and run open on this one, Michigan takes the swing and gets a good 1st down gain pic.twitter.com/WITSgVNjTM
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 6, 2021
Important point as you hear me say Cover 6 a lot during this review. That means QQH, not Cover 3 weak here. https://t.co/p8bu1h2ynW

Really good run defense vs Counter OH here. Pre snap bubble not there. DE leaks off the bonus OL and while combo gets good initial movement, fast response of BSLB makes it so DT doesn’t get pushed onto the post player pic.twitter.com/aMq19TQtfu
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 6, 2021
Michigan goes Lead Zone G Sweep. Zone blocking with zone pulls. Iowa in Cover 2 and a beat after the snap the play looks great for Michigan. Heck of a defensive effort here by whole D really pic.twitter.com/zBWHne94YY
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 6, 2021
First play for Iowa. They go weakside away from offset. Front side well blocked, but as has been an issue when I’ve watched Iowa, somewhere breaks down. Here, the backside isn’t good enough pic.twitter.com/qu0CKp9wHY
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 6, 2021
Really good scout from Iowa. 12 Personnel but go empty and get Michigan in base 3-4. Gets the matchup TE vs MIKE they want on the stick concept.
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 6, 2021
Good cut block too pic.twitter.com/ptwmLhhDe1
Again, the execution across the board for Iowa. RB may be able to do a little more with the LT-LG-C combo, but TE gets whooped and FS comes down in support pic.twitter.com/vsQWI83QJy
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 6, 2021
22P Lead Inside Zone. Safety does well here to speed up the combo and LG loses his block pic.twitter.com/1n0MggF9Oe
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 6, 2021
RB pass. Again, love the pin and pull action here for Iowa. Pass just missed. Game changer pic.twitter.com/XPNbwaHRpn
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 6, 2021
Love this boot action off of zone windback. Really hard on eye discipline and coverage principles pic.twitter.com/9NGwKyF6fG
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 6, 2021
Not great D, but mitigating damage pic.twitter.com/ItvQ0V7XTw
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 6, 2021
21 personnel from gun with a run tell. But C and RG not on same page, forces ball to bounce where OLB wins against the RT pic.twitter.com/umK0UzkGTi
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 6, 2021
RB to nub to get into high-low read. A major part of the 2019 LSU offense pic.twitter.com/Ro0esW6n1G
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 6, 2021
3rd and 3. Michigan goes drive and chase. Same play Bama ran vs Auburn, but different formation and chase receiver on the angle route pic.twitter.com/R1yeCMTdcP
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 6, 2021
Really well blocked and smart play by the WR, but interior blitz really makes this play hard to defend for Iowa. But then 10 yards becomes an explosive pic.twitter.com/WpXkZf2GAk
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 6, 2021
If you look at run first units this is always a huge tendency, especially those that struggle in pass pro. Michigan also had this issue in their early self scouts, but broke it more often as season went on https://t.co/4UKTefgo7l
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 6, 2021
Giving my two cents on what I view as Iowa’s biggest offensive limitation. I’m fine with under center driven O. Fine with heavy zone run scheme because they invest heavily in it. Like the boot and half boot package. But the drop back package needs revamped pic.twitter.com/VN83X1JO7E
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 7, 2021
This is good DL play but it hurts seeing a Ferentz OL getting consistently beat up on single blocks. This should be more pic.twitter.com/WaRJrRm2Qy
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 7, 2021
Have pounded this issue a few times so will only do this once. There is a reason Iowa moves the RB up when in protection, but it tells the defense the protection scheme and allows them to attack matchups and have you waste blockers while only sending 4 rushers pic.twitter.com/Sk83Pb7h07
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 7, 2021
Not having complementary football leads to issues like these. When a defense feels they can’t give up anything, they become unsound and give up everything. Good design to take advantage of Iowa’s DB aggressiveness though pic.twitter.com/1avt75Z4JT
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 7, 2021
When I say well thrown ball. Petras is good for a few of these a game pic.twitter.com/x5qFjU9ZLP
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 7, 2021
They do have the ability to effectively run "tracks" with what I believe they call "Zorro", but really it's just a way to ensure all players have backside support, and it's more for certain defensive fronts. It's not something they run much
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 7, 2021
Lead inside zone. Nice DL slant to squeeze the C working to 2nd level and they win back hats playside pic.twitter.com/0HrBFaeoV6
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 7, 2021
Even RB from gun less of a tip for defense but does say something’s. Stay for the end as I talk a few nice things about the Center on this play pic.twitter.com/UDWHO8myq1
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 7, 2021
believe 'tracks' for a lot of teams is called 'gang'...
— Hawkeye Gamefilm (@hawkeyegamefilm) December 7, 2021
teams vary on how they label this stuff & a lot of them probably overthink it pic.twitter.com/jLmHGxBzmX
Iowa runs drive and chase from stack. Michigan plays it differently than Iowa and it’s the drive that gets leverage pic.twitter.com/70NPMbhaSg
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 7, 2021
How the 6-1 is intended to work. Allows D to set an early edge and fold back numbers because it’s forced single blocks pic.twitter.com/sjkF5YF41m
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 7, 2021
Iowa runs drag and go. 12 personnel empty forces Michigan into 2-high. Neither LB carries the Go. Good use of personnel and formation to create an explosive here pic.twitter.com/P05KUum8w1
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 7, 2021
Michigan front just dominates this zone play pic.twitter.com/THbBoE4sqs
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 7, 2021
Back to back plays from Michigan DL pic.twitter.com/yB57cOe1md
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 7, 2021
Get a load of this end around design pic.twitter.com/h2Ym6wSMKJ
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 7, 2021
Y Delay for Michigan. First time I think it didn’t gain yardage this year pic.twitter.com/jKaQuBNaXe
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 7, 2021
Nice way to get to Cover 2 +1. 8 man drop. No one open pic.twitter.com/ooE7bndDab
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 7, 2021
This jet sweep needs to end up with more yards pic.twitter.com/vtTb9wiEha
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 7, 2021
Iowa goes mesh on 3rd down. Bull rush by Hutchinson right through the RT pic.twitter.com/xOJY21wxvQ
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 8, 2021
Michigan matches 12 personnel with 4-3. Now when Iowa goes empty they can check cover 1. Much better for Michigan pic.twitter.com/dHXSDFs8r7
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 8, 2021
Talked earlier on what I felt needed to be updated schematically for Iowa. But this execution is why the offense is so far down this year. This play needs to be more yards pic.twitter.com/XYPtPdoL97
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 8, 2021
Eventually will see Michigan go to more zone runs because Iowa is defending the counter really well pic.twitter.com/VifvazWtnp
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 8, 2021
Iowa does well presnap here and gets Michigan in a tough play to complete mesh vs Cover 2. QB feeling pressure bails out of a clean pocket and can’t see the post come open until late pic.twitter.com/uEYPgIhY7w
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 8, 2021
Back to boot. Good use of motion with how Michigan wants to avoid some match ups at the Lb level. Identify man, slip the WR under the formation pic.twitter.com/hfdStkOheM
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 8, 2021
2nd time Iowa tries to go weakside because Michigan is shifting their front to strength. Runs right into a Ni blitz pic.twitter.com/x7EZprp7tp
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 8, 2021
Behind the chains so again 12 Personnel empty gets matched with 4-3. Michigan can get more exotic with creeper pressure. You make a positive, but could get more if you could protect pic.twitter.com/9oEEKN3qWO
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 8, 2021
3rd and 8 and 12P empty sees Cover 1 from 4-3 personnel. No Q run threat, MIKE just drifts with QB eyes and no one open.
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 8, 2021
Bull rush pushing OL into QB’s lap too pic.twitter.com/dLHF9wM99O
Iowa gets Michigan to set the protection and then rotates presnap. Gets a free rusher with Michigan backed up pic.twitter.com/QQSjFzWurE
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 8, 2021
Last time going to harp on losing one on one blocks. It’s a theme, it’s a problem. This should be more yards but DL controls the OL at point of attack.
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 8, 2021
Also note despite the NT shade, offense runs away from Hutch pic.twitter.com/dXjjMJS3yt
RB shifts to a cheat alignment. Watched the LB stance. 2-man. Dig will eventually come open but the DL games get home and force the QB to bail pic.twitter.com/R3VcGypxWu
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 8, 2021
Swing screen. Big time blocks on the edge. QB reading the block on the FSLB. Gets blocked throw. Last resort (which we will see for the first time later) is the draw pic.twitter.com/KFcAir4Cts
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 8, 2021
I have been waiting for a decade for someone in the B1G to put this on film so I could write about it. Been talking about it this whole time. So of course it finally happens and it just gets absolutely destroyed. Hurts the heart.
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 8, 2021
Star route (stutter, go, 18ish yard comeback). 7 man full slide protection and you get great pick ups from TE and RB. Clean pocket, separation on the outside. Great playcall! Missed throw… pic.twitter.com/HVOc1gIQf5
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 8, 2021
Push motion swing screen QB draw. Iowa wants to be two high, so when LB matches RB, it’s 4 on 5 to the deep safeties pic.twitter.com/NMshUGsJvM
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 8, 2021
Using the angle route, this time on a Texas concept (angle under vertical). Iowa gets home with a Fire Zone and dropping an End. Really nice throw here, underrated in difficulty back across the body. Another 1st down pic.twitter.com/1yZxd0mFtC
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 8, 2021
Nice design to get post-wheel of Power Read action (which Michigan doesn’t run but it still impacts the D). Sure, I’d love to hit the wheel here. The greats probably would. But guys… stepping into a pocket with a clean hitter coming at you, I get not risking it pic.twitter.com/kZXisKNvZR
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 8, 2021
Michigan goes back to push motion, but trying to sequence off the screen and get Iowa to attack it. Iowa does, and the route behind it is open, but the protection has the wrong call side and so QB has to check down early to the swing route. Tough stuff. Good D pressure pic.twitter.com/eiF49Na1uY
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 8, 2021
If this has been a problem this year for UM, it hasn't been highlighted as much as on this drive. Now that UM has the win, that's actually really good news for UM. Georgia will use the Center's slide to attack away. Now they have bowl practice to correct before that matchup
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 8, 2021
Great, great play by Hutchinson, poor technique by the RT, really bad support by the RB. All ingredients here. pic.twitter.com/ymKgAMJ4rA
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 8, 2021
Michigan alters the snap count/timing, knocks off the LB blitz. Interior well picked up, but two others leak through for different reasons. Impacts accuracy a bit, but needs to be a catch here pic.twitter.com/smKBmUNZ09
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) December 8, 2021
Hard to say Iowa gets bailed out on a Hail Mary, but what are you doing running fire zone in an obvious Hail Mary situation? UM has in backup QB which almost ended in disaster in a similar situation earlier this year. But man pic.twitter.com/sRghYzKcjX
