I breakdown interesting plays - schematically, technically, and from and execution standpoint - from the 2021 Michigan at Michigan State football game.
Tempo #4. Get Michigan communicating a bit. Poor route though and UM gets a 3rd down stop pic.twitter.com/mMZ7MLGfKf

They run FZ Field Backer a couple times a game. Might even be a day 1 install. TE not a vertical threat, weak bunch means fast 3 is likely. Moten should expect some kind of under and Colson should expect to make a push call here and match Walker. Frustrating. https://t.co/oX0yFMeDMI

4th and 4 slot fade. Perfect execution pic.twitter.com/h2SKCMLiiU

Part 2, just some thoughts on fan perception of play calling, and what is good and not good for many fans after the fact pic.twitter.com/lO8SmNNzT9

2pt conversion on mesh return. QB eyes pull the LB out of the throw window pic.twitter.com/jh9PFUrRLO

Michigan comes out unbalanced and MSU misaligns and I think it saved a TD for them so there’s that pic.twitter.com/FuwhYRN6tE

Well timed CB blitz, something MSU seems to dial up more in 2nd halves to break bail tendency. Here, WR goes with tendency when he needs to block the CB pic.twitter.com/NGrClceNpQ

13 personnel split zone, putting 3 TEs on one side of the formation. Think LBs freak out a bit with all those gaps and lose frontside responsibility pic.twitter.com/X22ccVTRZh
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 4, 2021
Suboptimal to have some guys blocking one direction and the other guys blocking the other way pic.twitter.com/4sVkNZnc2p

Michigan State successfully defends TE delay which I had thought we all agreed defenses would not defend pic.twitter.com/JOt6VWMFR6

You knew flea flicker was coming eventually. Well defended pic.twitter.com/i5C8or06hL

Again attacking MSU 3rd down tendencies pic.twitter.com/j6VDg16KSR

No idea what coverage this is. Think MSU partially busts. Pressure from CB over #2. Eventually gets home and they get off the field pic.twitter.com/uUNIF4VHzg
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 4, 2021
Looks like a bust in coverage as Michigan disguises Tampa 2. MSU anticipates pressure and throws the tunnel, but because of the coverage bust, the WR can muscle his way to a first down pic.twitter.com/8s3WL679E0

Nothing special about the design, just a guy making a play again pic.twitter.com/frmjkpQNt4

Michigan baits a throw by going Cloud Cover 3 but misses a chance at an INT pic.twitter.com/0WpLzmInD8

Kinda cool Counter OT read vs an Odd defense. Block the OLB, read the DE, from pistol pic.twitter.com/6pCiyDYhqy
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 5, 2021
Tempo 4 not responsible for the problem. No idea why the DE decides to vacate his gap to go make a play when just staying in his gap gets Michigan D off the field pic.twitter.com/3XtlpW6Su8

2PT try. Pretty good coverage but hand doesn’t go through the basket and WR has strong hands to pull it in pic.twitter.com/TBUwyrBfm7
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 5, 2021
Great tackle by the safety. I think as the QB learns more in these situations, this will be a keep read with DE in no man’s land. But today it’s five and UM out numbered on the edge pic.twitter.com/alWwbbasL0
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 5, 2021
Another big 3rd down as MSU again goes CB pressure. It’s tipped this time though as MSU has 2 DBs over the knob TE. FS does not help here pic.twitter.com/iVkZijkfAy
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 5, 2021
Michigan’s luckiest play of the game, ball gets kicked OOB. I touch on UM trying to add 2 lead blockers for the QB to gain numbers with motion, why it’s still a bad read (likely pretty predetermined) and why the MSU defender didn’t “ just fall on it” pic.twitter.com/HxJZYsF7Of
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 5, 2021
Sure seems like a broken play to me pic.twitter.com/z0V6mW4K3T
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 5, 2021
Don’t love the play call vs a Cover 1 look presnap, but WR open. Think pressure didn’t allow him to see the coverage leverage and threw the wrong area on the corner route pic.twitter.com/XDOizkacWc

Back to windback. Almost breaks pic.twitter.com/UPNhYAdAvS

Big time sack. MSU really doesn’t sell the feel of run and DE works straight to QB pic.twitter.com/ARRpb9O7O2

Big time strip sack pic.twitter.com/F9jqfosSCb

Fumbled exchange… pic.twitter.com/OEh4ZNnaBB

Counter OT much better defended pic.twitter.com/Y8uHX9oxOR
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 5, 2021
Wildcat from MSU. Michigan not prepared. May get the stop if not for a great cut block by a TE pic.twitter.com/ySFBRKmOkS

Final TD of the game. Again, pin and fold inside zone pic.twitter.com/acYDT10S8f

Shot play. Just a drop pic.twitter.com/Wu5VxuSrug

4th and 4. Double slant with a flat. LB flashes to clear the window and the slant wins inside, you make the throw pic.twitter.com/mB6AW6zvhq
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 5, 2021
Simple high-low read vs Cover 3. CB triggers hard on the flat route, which we’ll get back to pic.twitter.com/hxrkKbc01D
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 5, 2021
Smash fade. MSU brackets the RB and TE. Fade is open but missed pic.twitter.com/GZ6blIzfY1
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 5, 2021
If Ni (or LB) stays in (i.e. zone) then the first slant is off, because that guy stays in the window. But the first slant almost always pulls the CB and holds the LB, so the second slant comes open. And if the 2nd slant isn't open, then the flat has outside leverage on outside CB
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) November 5, 2021
Back to the high low that the CB triggered early on. This time they bait it. INT and game pic.twitter.com/MtqG1J42Hy
