I breakdown interesting plays - schematically, technically, and from an execution standpoint - from the 2021 Michigan at Wisconsin football game.
Michigan Positives:
- The OL proved that they could maintain a run threat against one of the best run defenses and maintain their run-based offense (the run-pass ratio adjusted to more pass heavy, but Michigan didn't have to abandon who they are)
- QB showed ability to hit deep touch throws, along with WRs adjusting to the ball in the air. Helps maintain vertical threat
- Michigan had several schematic wins against a top flight DC
- Michigan DL again stepped up, showing more consistency than they have all year, and getting great pass rush off the edge
- Michigan diagnosed and attacked protection tendencies in their pressure package
Michigan Negatives:
- The pass game still struggles to show much from a quick/intermediate game. Struggled adjusting on underneath throws to many of the Wisconsin zone looks, and timing wasn't good enough to provide many catch and run opportunities. Wisconsin multiplicity resulted in some offensive confusion with respect to reads
- Coverage on the 7-12 yard out/flat remains a concern. Lots of MOD and soft coverage on the edge is too easy, even for the coverages called. Michigan playing mostly safe defense, but feels will need to mix up calls more to take that away.
- Screens are coming, Michigan hasn't defended them well and Wisconsin left plenty of screen yards on the field
- Short yardage and short red zone (inside the 5) remain a challenge
- Mertz had nearly a handful of throws that reminded you of the prospect that was recruited. If he can make those vertical throws, it will open up a lot of the offense
- I thought the playcalling was mostly solid. This is a limited offensive line, and I believe some of the calculus needs to change, but schematically had some very well timed/designed plays to take advantage of some things Michigan did defensively.
- The front 7 for Wisconsin is probably the best I've seen so far (Iowa and PSU are close behind). Extremely disciplined, physical, shed blocks, leak very few yards. Can play base fits or be multiple to get key stops. Show offense a lot and make read games challenging as an offense. Safeties are great in run support.
- The offensive struggles have forced it to be simplified. This has minimized run diversity and protection schemes, and made life a bit easier for defensive fronts to attack. I don't believe this is a team that can lean heavily on run game. Pass game still isn't where it needs to be to lean pass. But a balanced approach hitting the various levels of the defense is needed to find any sort of efficiency.
- The OL does not dominate anymore. This is hinted at above, but even in the base schemes they allow defenders to get off blocks and don't consistently get dominating movement up front.
- I'm not sure this is really a negative, but I do think the defense is vulnerable on the outside on vertical routes. Wisconsin's CBs in general are very aggressive, and safeties aggressive in run support. It leaves CBs on islands quite often, and they tend to bite and then grab on double moves. Strong, well timed double moves can get over the top of this defense.

This is an early successful run by Michigan. Wisconsin DL is so good, but they don’t really lose any blocks here and churn out 6 pic.twitter.com/TDFPw7Amic

Freeze Option from Michigan. Watch the ILB here with a very very physical play and destroys what could otherwise be a good look pic.twitter.com/wcd1iGzrhh

Great play by the DE to get inside the block and a stop in the backfield, some things to work on on the backside for Michigan pic.twitter.com/71h3YzVfhL

DE makes a hell of a play here and doesn’t allow OZ to expand at all. Bottles up the rest of the run pic.twitter.com/7kV5G8QneM

Where the 2-4 can mess with RPO reads. Blocking scheme is off by alignment and OLB drops into slant window blowing the play up. But by alignment, he should have been the read pic.twitter.com/dyD5CgsvnD

You want to change the launch point for the QB and protect your OL but you can’t run this turn back blocking and put a TE 1-on-1 with the best player on the field. pic.twitter.com/uAgmlkdQ9o

This is why attacking Wisconsin on the edge is so hard. They see action coming back and their safeties attack with violence and discipline pic.twitter.com/tvlPM5OOJj

Well designed wheel. Ball has to come out on time, especially because this play you know is likely going to the wheel pic.twitter.com/Ea5NVr4dX5

Questioned a little this play call live but it was there for success. Need to clean up the hinge blocks on the backside of the play to prevent the hole from collapsing pic.twitter.com/1C8WDX47rf

Haven’t seen the Lead T sweep from Michigan this year. It is… not executed well. This D front kills it pic.twitter.com/ktKbEdbUur

Same/similar scheme Wisconsin used against Michigan's RPO that got a free hitter to the RB/QB and messed with the RPO read with the OLB dropping right into the window https://t.co/ySCvdngyTL

Michigan tries to either lean on matchup with the RB or delayed release vs pressure. Great job on the peel and then rally to the TE pic.twitter.com/ixQCwI17ZE

Best executed play so far from Wisconsin O. Very small window and no room for additional time in the pocket. Great catch pic.twitter.com/2JFPd8NVAy

Biggest area on the outside where I think Michigan can improve. Right now playing it safe with called changeups to mix it up, but at some point the base defense needs to at least challenge on these sorts of throws pic.twitter.com/w9ifthAIMC

Great 3rd and long play call vs a bracket coverage (I think). Big play by the CB to force a kick pic.twitter.com/vDtVGNNSuI

Stout is good in that it looks like 2 high and generally gets you a bracket weak and really takes away #3. But in this instance the QB can confirm the SS is playing flat and you’ve given up post leverage, which is a dangerous throw to give up

First play of the second half and Wisconsin takes a shot. I want to talk about trust: trust in teammates and trust in your technique. That trust is a significant difference in outcomes for Michigan in 2021 compared to 2020 pic.twitter.com/2t72it7Lpr

Michigan attacking protections with pressure schemes. How that works from a design standpoint: pic.twitter.com/TWlWUCy5Sl
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) October 6, 2021
Hesitancy to call it "gap-and-a-half" is that UM is typically gapped out up front (defender for every gap). It's more a philosophy in how they play their gap. It's less a disruptive, penetrative philosophy, more maintain gap and control blocker to allow yourself into other gaps
